Your Guide to Having a Great Summer Day Out with the Kids

Before the pandemic, most of us jetted off to a hot country with the kids for an all-inclusive summer holiday. But nowadays, the UK summer heat is so tempting that a staycation works a treat.

The switch to staycations comes as no surprise – 55% of us Brits will holiday in the UK this year, according to Mintel. So, if you’re planning a holiday in Yorkshire or a day out with the kids, we’ve just the checklist to make the most of your day.

When Do the Summer Holidays (2024) Start?

In England, the summer holidays begin on the 25th of July and end on the 2nd of September. Wales and Northern Ireland have similar dates, but if you’re from Scotland, the holidays have already begun!

Throughout summer, Stockeld Park will transform into a fun festival, with tribute acts like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, silent discos and family game shows. These outdoor activities are great for the entire family, so no one will be left twiddling their thumbs!

Family Day Out Checklist

1. Choose Your Day Trip Destination

When planning a day trip, you must consider the finer details – are there toilets, places nearby to eat and enough entertainment to keep your little ones happy?

Heading to Yorkshire for a mini-break or day trip is great for every traveller. It’s rich in culture and history, so budding historians will have plenty to learn. If you want an energy-burning day out, go for an adventure park with all the necessary facilities.

2. Pack the Essentials

Going out for just one day can involve packing bags full of kit! You’ll know the essentials by now, so our packing list will be a great reminder.

  • Stroller or pram
  • Nappies and wipes
  • Spare clothes and some warm layers
  • Bibs for messy mealtimes
  • Water and snacks like fruit, sweet treats and crisps
  • Hat and suncream
  • Raincoat and rain cover for pram
  • A small toy or book for the journey homes

3. Pick Your Activities

The unfortunate thing about days out is that you’re on a tight timeframe! You must prioritise which activities your kids will love and how long you’ll spend in each area.

We have lots of activities during the Summer Adventure that you can pack into one day. Everything is close to each other – one moment, you’re wandering through the Enchanted Forest, the next, you’re on the go-karts or huge inflatables!

4. Plan for Bad Weather

A raincoat won’t be enough to keep everyone happy if it’s pouring it down. Choose somewhere that has indoor space and a ticket guarantee should the weather get bad.

Our rainy-day policy allows visitors to get a free return ticket if we need to close down our outdoor park due to heavy downpours (lasting over 2 hours).

5. Arrange Snacks & Lunchtime

Your kids will work up a hunger from all the fun they’re a part of, so you might end up eating out. We’re hosting BBQs in the main field for some sizzling lunchtime treats, or you can pre-order a picnic from Woodlands Cafe* if you want to cut out the hassle of preparing one.

*You must order 24 hours before your visit, which you can do when you purchase your ticket online or via your order confirmation.
