How to Keep Kids Active During Summer Holidays

How Do I Keep My Kids Active During the Summer?

79% of parents believe their children’s screen time has increased since the pandemic, according to a BBC report. With all the technology and content readily available, this uptake has become a shared problem worldwide.

Ofcom’s recent research shows that nearly a quarter of UK 5-7-year-olds now have their own smartphone. This is a stark difference from previous generations and ultimately means they’re spending less time outside than ever before. So, how can you cut screen time as a family?

Extensive screen time is a bad habit – and like all habits, you can break it. This summer holiday is the perfect time to cut screens and get active.

Tips for Keeping Kids Active During the Summer

1. Structure Their Week

Six weeks of free time can result in a lot of late nights, sleep-ins and mindless scrolling on social media. Set a daily routine with appropriate bedtimes and plenty of activities to keep their minds and body healthy.

2. Place Limits on Screen Times

Four in ten parents struggle to control their kids’ screen time, so they restrict when and how long they can use it. Overuse can lead to mental and physical fatigue, affecting a child’s ability to learn and focus.

You should consider swapping phones for books and game consoles for outdoor activities. Your kids will never get vitamin D from playing online – so much awaits outside your home!

Plus, playing outdoors encourages active imaginations! Stockeld Park’s exciting mascots and immersive play areas will inspire your little ones to imagine and create.

3. Take a Family Day Out

The best way to keep kids active is to take them away from sources of distraction. A day trip is just the answer – no Wi-Fi, TVs or mobile devices – just you and your children.

Whether in Yorkshire or a nearby area, head to Stockeld Park for a day of family fun. We’re open every day during the summer holidays, with lots of activities to keep your little ones active.

If you want to burn energy, try the outdoor inflatables, playgrounds or indoor play area. Afterwards, stroll through our Enchanted Forest and meet ancient forest friends, like Russell, the talking tree and a village of woodland fairies.

4. Organise a Playdate

Kids are more active when playing with others, so on your next trip out, invite some friends or host a kid’s party if someone’s an August baby!

While some outdoor activities are height—and age-restricted, our Playhive is great for every age group and for escaping hot weather. It’s recently been awarded the best indoor attraction in the UK, so you know it’s worth the visit.
